This project has been aimed at studying the terminology and phraseology in English popular science books on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) translated into Spanish. The main goal of the research stay at Beren was to learn about software alignment tools are and how to use them in order to analyse an ad-hoc English-Spanish biotechnology corpus. To achieve this aim, a two million-word bilingual parallel corpus consisting of twenty-two popular science books on GMOs was compiled so as to examine the terminology and phraseology which impregnates the genre of popularisation in English and Spanish. In order to compare the translated terminology rendered into Spanish, a one million-word reference corpus was also compiled, consisting of eleven books written by Spanish native speakers. The main result of the research stay was the alignment of the English-Spanish corpus using the TCA2 software developed by Knut Hofland and Øystein Reigem. This result will form the basis for further investigations into GMO phraseology. |
